Amusing and Serious campaign to support the fuel efficiency standards

David Roberts posted an image from PewFuelEfficiency.org from their ad campaign in support of the proposed new CAFE legislation in the current energy bill.

I can't find the image on PewFuelEfficiency.org right now, but they do have a few others available:

Interestingly enough, my 1999 Saturn SL2 still gets 37-39mpg highway, based on rough mental math from our most recent road trip. So yeah, shouldn't be that hard...except for all those people who insist on driving small houses around, for that 1 time/month they might need to carry lots of stuff. :P

Or the Status Symbol, or any other number of reasons that people choose to drive those small houses. And that's the rub, not enough people will voluntarily change their vehicle purchasing or driving habits on their own.

Thinking about my most recent vehicle, it was nice to have a nice solid, practically all steel vehicle to drive around in, but how much of that weight could have been saved and translated to fuel economy? It got about 32 mpg if I was very careful and used some of the safer Hypermiling tricks, but generally got 29mpg. How much would shaving a few hundred pounds in weight off have gained? Could that be done without making the vehicle "less safe"?
